1932年東京生まれ。

東京芸術大学音楽学部打楽器科に学ぶ。在学中にＮＨＫ交響楽団副指揮者となり、56年デビュー。60年Ｎ響と世界一周演奏旅行を行い一躍海外でも注目され、62年チェコ国立放送交響楽団を指揮してヨーロッパのオーケストラにデビュー。以来、国内はもとより、ベルリン・フィル、ウィーン・フィルをはじめとする国外の主要オーケストラを常時客演指揮し、国際的な演奏活動を行っている。
特に、メルボルン交響楽団との関係は長期にわたり、74年首席指揮者就任、87年桂冠指揮者の称号を受けた。94年メルボルンに岩城の名を冠した「イワキ・オーディトリアム」がオープン。

国内においては、88年オーケストラ・アンサンブル金沢の設立に尽力し、発足とともに音楽監督に就任、コンポーザー・イン・レジデンス制度や、日本人作曲家への作品委嘱、定期演奏会におけるゲスト・オーケストラのシステムの確立、海外公演、ＣＤ録音と意欲的な活動を展開している。
演奏活動以外にも、テレビ・ラジオへの出演、プロデューサー、音楽アドヴァイザー、執筆等活動等、多方面にわたる。

その他、石川県文化行政顧問、福井県音楽アドヴァイザー、作陽学園音楽最高顧問理事、東京芸大客員教授も務めている。87年中島健蔵音楽賞、88年サントリー音楽賞、93年放送文化賞、96年紫綬褒章受章、05年度朝日賞受賞。また、エッセイを中心に著作も多数あり、「フィルハーモニーの風景」で91年日本エッセイストクラブ賞を受賞している。

現在、ＮＨＫ交響楽団終身正指揮者、メルボルン交響楽団終身桂冠指揮者、札幌交響楽団終身桂冠指揮者、オーケストラ・アンサンブル金沢音楽監督、京都市交響楽団首席客演指揮者、東京混声合唱団音楽監督を兼任。石川県立音楽堂芸術総監督も務める。日本芸術院会員。

近著に「オーケストラの職人たち」（文芸春秋）がある。

Born in Tokyo, Hiroyuki Iwaki studied at the Instrumental Department of the Tokyo University of Fine Arts.
He made his conducting debut in September 1956 with the NHK Symphony Orchestra, and was appointed to the post of conductor with the NHK Symphony in 1963.
He has enjoyed enormous success in Europe, conducting the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonic Orchestras, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Gewandhaus Orchestra, Leipzig.
In 1990, the French government made him an Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters.
In Japan, Maestro Iwaki has achieved the highly honored position of Chief Conductor for life of the NHK Symphony Orchestra and, with the Orchestra, has toured China, South East Asia, the USSR, South America, the USA, Australia and Europe.
For his contribution to contemporary music, he was awarded the Kenzo Nakajima Award in 1987 and the coveted Suntory Music Award in 1988.
As Artistic Director, he opened Tokyo's new cultural centre, the Tokyu Bunkamura Orchard Hall in 1988 and, that same year, he founded Japan's only permanent professional chamber orchestra, Orchestra Ensemble Kanazawa. The OEK is in constant demand in Japan and has also performed in France, Belgium, Germany and Australia.
In addition to his career in music, he is also a noted author and in 1991 won the Japan Essayist Club Award.
His Decca recording of works by Messiaen has won a Grand Prix du Disque.
In 1993, Maestro Iwaki was honored by the Japanese Broadcasting Corporation with the presentation of the NHK Broadcasting Culture Award.
In 1996, the Emperor of Japan conferred on him the Medal of Honor with Purple Ribbon.
